Driving Test Centres in Coventry & the Surrounding Area

If you're learning to drive in and around Coventry, these are the DVSA practical test centres you're most likely to use — with what to expect at each, how to book, and where to get local lesson preparation. You book (and reschedule) your test on GOV.UK; MMS prepares you on the roads and conditions around your chosen centre. Most learners in our area test at Coventry (Bayton Road), Nuneaton, Rugby or Warwick.

Which centre for your town?

Every centre, same format

What every practical test involves

Wherever you test, the DVSA practical follows the same format and lasts about 40 minutes. Here's every part of the test, in the order it happens.

  1. 1

    Eyesight check

    ~1 min

Reading a number plate from about 20 metres. If you can't, the test won't go ahead.

  2. 2

    “Show me, tell me”

    ~2 min

Vehicle-safety questions — one before you drive, one while you're driving.

  3. 3

    General driving

    Throughout

General driving on a range of roads and traffic conditions, following the examiner's directions.

  4. 4

    Independent driving

    20-35 min

20 to 35 minutes of independent driving, following a sat nav, traffic signs, or a combination of the two.

  5. 5

    Reversing manoeuvre

    1 manoeuvre

One reversing manoeuvre, chosen by the examiner from the standard set.

  6. 6

    Emergency stop

    ~1 in 7 tests

For about 1 in 7 tests, an emergency stop — stopping quickly and safely on the examiner's signal.

15 driving faults allowed

You can make up to 15 driving faults and still pass; a single serious or dangerous fault is a fail.

2026 booking rules

If you need to change your test centre

Since 9 June 2026 the rules for moving a booked car test have changed. When you change your test, you can only:

  • stay at your current test centre;
  • move to one of the three centres nearest to where your test is currently booked; or
  • move back to the centre you first booked (or were booked at on 9 June 2026).

Those three options are worked out from the centre your test is booked at now, not your home address — so they can shift each time you move it. You can also only make two changes to a booking; after that you have to cancel and book a new test. And you must book and change the test yourself — it is against the law for an instructor or anyone else to book a car driving test on your behalf. Book and manage everything on GOV.UK.

In practice, for most local learners the nearest centres are the four above. A common additional option for Nuneaton, Bedworth, Rugby and north-Coventry learners is Hinckley, just over the Leicestershire border: 33 Brookside, Hinckley, LE10 2TGbook on GOV.UK.

If you're testing on the Birmingham or Solihull side, use the official GOV.UK test-centre finder to check the nearest centres to you, with their current addresses and facilities.

Choosing a centre

How to choose your test centre

Pick the centre whose roads you're most comfortable on — usually your nearest, because you'll have practised there. If two are close, ask your instructor which local road types play to your strengths.

Choose carefully at the booking stage: once a car test is booked, you can only move it to one of the three nearest centres, keep your current one, or return to the centre you first booked.

Frequently asked questions

Do I have to take my test at my nearest centre?

No — you choose your centre when you first book. But since June 2026, if you later change a car test you can only move it to one of the three nearest centres, keep your current one, or go back to the one you first booked. Most learners pick their local centre anyway, because practising on the roads around it is a real advantage.

Where do I book and see pass rates?

Both are on GOV.UK. MMS doesn't book or influence the DVSA test; we prepare you on the local roads and help you judge when you're ready.

Can MMS prepare me if I test outside the Coventry area?

If you're learning with us across Coventry and the surrounding towns, we can prepare you on local roads before your test wherever you've booked it. Our lessons and instructors are based in the Coventry and Warwickshire area.
