What the practical test involves
Every DVSA practical test follows the same format, wherever you take it. It lasts around 40 minutes and includes:
- an eyesight check - reading a number plate from about 20 metres;
- "show me, tell me" vehicle-safety questions;
- general driving on a mix of roads;
- 20 to 35 minutes of independent driving, following a sat nav, traffic signs, or a combination;
- one reversing manoeuvre (parallel park, bay park, or pulling up on the right); and
- possibly an emergency stop (about 1 in 7 tests).
You can make up to 15 driving faults ("minors") and still pass; a single serious or dangerous fault means a fail.

As Warwickshire's largest town, Nuneaton gives you plenty to practise: calmer residential streets for the basics, then busier town-centre one-way sections, the ring road, and the multi-lane roundabouts along Eastboro Way, plus routes such as Coton Road, Queens Road and Higham Lane. Building confidence on these everyday roads is the best preparation - we focus your later lessons on the kinds of junctions, roundabouts and independent-driving sections common around the centre.
