What the theory test involves

The car theory test has two parts, taken one after the other in the same sitting. The first is 50 multiple-choice questions in 57 minutes, and the pass mark is 43 out of 50. The second is the hazard perception part: you watch 14 video clips containing 15 developing hazards, each scored up to five points, and the pass mark is 44 out of 75. You must pass both parts in the same sitting; if you pass one and fail the other, you retake the whole test. Unlike the practical test, the theory test is taken indoors at a computer, so the local roads make no difference - what matters is that you are prepared for both parts and bring the right identification.

What to bring

Bring your UK photocard provisional driving licence. You need it to sit the test, and without valid identification you will be turned away and lose your fee. Arrive early to allow time to check in and store your belongings, as you cannot take notes, bags, or a phone into the testing room.

Book only through the official GOV.UK service - many other sites charge a fee to do the same thing.
