What affects how many lessons you need
The official guide suggests many learners take around 45 hours of professional tuition plus private practice, but there's no fixed number. What moves it up or down:
- Prior experience - any seat time behind the wheel usually reduces the hours needed.
- How often you lesson - regular weekly (or intensive) lessons tend to be more efficient than occasional ones.
- Confidence and comfort - nervous learners may prefer a gentler pace, and that's completely fine.

Is automatic cheaper than manual?
It can work out slightly cheaper if you need fewer lessons, because there's less to learn - but the hourly rate is the same (£37) for both. The bigger saving comes from block booking rather than the gearbox. If your goal is a licence to drive any car, manual may still be the better value for you long-term. Ways to keep the cost down
- Book a block - the per-hour cost drops as the block size grows.
- Practise between lessons - supervised private practice in a suitable car reinforces what you learn and can cut the number of paid hours.
- Lesson consistently - momentum means less re-learning each time.
