What do I need to take to my driving test? Your driving licence is the essential item - you must be recognisable from its photo. Add your theory pass details, your glasses if you wear them, and a suitable, roadworthy car, and you're covered.
Your driving licence
Your UK photocard driving licence is the one thing you cannot test without. The examiner checks it before the test begins, and you must be recognisable from the photo. If you still hold an older paper licence without a photo, take a valid passport as well so your identity can be confirmed.
Your theory test pass certificate
Bring your theory test pass certificate if you have it. You will not usually be turned away if you cannot find it, as the pass can be confirmed on the system, but having it with you avoids any delay or doubt on the day. Remember your theory pass must still be valid - it lasts two years from the date you passed.
Glasses, contact lenses and a suitable car
If you need glasses or contact lenses to read a number plate at the required distance, wear them - the test opens with an eyesight check, and you must wear the same correction throughout. You also need a car to test in. Most candidates use their instructor's car; if you'd like to use ours for your test, ask us how that works, as arrangements vary. If you plan to use your own, it has to meet the DVSA's rules first - see using your own car for the test. On the day itself, aim to arrive about ten minutes early so you're settled before the examiner calls you.
What happens if you forget something
The DVSA is strict on this: if you do not bring the right things, your test is cancelled and you will not get your money back. It is the same outcome as a no-show.
