What the practical test involves

Every DVSA practical test follows the same format, wherever you take it. It lasts around 40 minutes and includes:

an eyesight check - reading a number plate from about 20 metres;
"show me, tell me" vehicle-safety questions;
general driving on a mix of roads;
around 20 minutes of independent driving, usually following a sat-nav;
one reversing manoeuvre (parallel park, bay park, or pulling up on the right); and
possibly an emergency stop (about one test in three).

You can make up to 15 driving faults ("minors") and still pass; a single serious or dangerous fault means a fail.
